It is common to eat rice porridge when people get sick. The traditional recipe cooks from raw rice so the dish becomes like rice paste. However, I use steamed rice, and looks like soup rice. Soup rice is called “zosui” and this dish is in between rice porridge and soup rice. The taste has been arranged somewhat Chinese.
Rice porridge with seven green vegetables is eaten every January 7th. In Japan, we celebrate the new year and eat “osechi”, the special foods. On January 7th, we eat this porridge to finish the celebration and go back to daily life, and also to pray for “no sickness, no hazard, and coming luck”. During the season, seven vegetables are sold at supermarkets in raw or dried.
