Fried Rice Cake (Agemochi)

This is a kind of “osenbei”, snacks made from “mochi”. Fried “mochi” is called “agemochi” or “okaki”. You can change seasonings to enjoy various tastes. I introduce a simple version, using soya-bean sauce or salt. “Mochi” needs to be dried before fry. If you use “kagami mochi”, dry as they are and break into pieces using your hands. If you use ordinary square mochi, cut into pieces using a knife and then dry.

“Kagami mochi” is a rounded, piled mochi that we offer to gods from December 28th to January 10th. We often eat this mochi as this “agemochi”.
